Aparigraha- Let it Go

(aparigraha): sanskrit
(non-covetousness): english

December is winding down! A new year is on the horizon calling us to clear and cleanse for fresh beginnings.  This is a great time to ask yourself: What can I leave behind in 2011 to blossom in 2012?

Aparigraha is part of the moral code outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras, which calls the practitioner to examine what he or she holds onto.

What gives you energy?  What drains your energy?

What do you cling on to physically… mentally…emotionally?

Create a list of things that occupy your time and energy and money that you wish did not and another list of what you would like to own, do, or become.  Think of how, starting with simple tangible steps, you can begin to reconcile the two and manifest the life that brings you authentic joy.

Some ways to practice letting go:

  • Give away money or give some of your free time instead.  Have no attachment to the results.
  • Clean out your closets and your pantries, donate what you don’t need to people who do, get rid of junk (recycle everything possible).
  • One breath at a time. Practice energetically clearing out as you exhale and visualize inhaling clean positive energy. Let your mind be clear and focused, your body still and relaxed, your heart open. Breathing in this conscious way will have an immediate and noticeable effect on your attitude and ease your capability to let go of tensions on any level.
  • Practice relaxing in forward folding yoga postures.
